hi, I'm Japanese and a part-time English teacher. Your site is really cool and useful, but I kind of felt uneasy I first ran into it. think the color of the site is a bit too dark. It doesn't look suitable for youngesters at a first glance. Hope it's get popular and have more enjoyable videos. Good work!

  1. Thank you so much for commenting MrsMalone! I really appreciate it because I feel like I have constructed the website with very little idea of what will and won't appeal. I can brighten up the existing site a little by putting a lighter color background underneath the edges. But I'm not sure that will make enough of a difference,

Alternatively I can create a separate section of the site for younger viewers with movies from the family genre. I'm not sure what will work best and would love to hear what others think.

As well as the appearance of the site, I don't know what movies people will like, so I have tried to put up a little of everything, hoping to meet all tastes. All feedback and suggestions are very welcome.

I taught English in Japan for two years and I remember well how difficult my students found listening to English was. I think a key way to help is to provide more exposure to natural English. Movies seem like a great source for that to me and hopefully they will be motivating for learners too.

Five years ago, I don't think it would have been possible to send students off to watch movies with out our help. What would they do if they couldn't understand - or couldn't work out where one word ended and another began. But with clickable transcripts and tools like google translate and a good learners dictionary I think they should be able to make sense of them. It's all about maximising exposure really. I think they've got to hear lots of English to begin to make sense of it.

  2. Hi Vicki, I had such an enjoyable talk over twitter with you yesterday. I had no idea you'd be an teacher of English, let alone having been in Japan once. I'm so glad to get to know you.
Now about the site, I know there must be some limitations that you can do with the design, but let me tell you more about what impression I had when I first run into the site.
Since I'm not a native speaker of English, I can't tell easily if sites are decent or something dirty/fishy. I can't read messages on the screen right away. So the crucial element to decide if I keep on reading sites or not is the color of a top page. I usually skip a site with black in background. Also the yellow at the top somehow turns me away.
I guess how you feel to colors might varies depending on what culture you're in, so it'd be good to gather voices from people from diverse culture.
About the contents, I'd live to see more dramas. I usually prefer drama to movie with its shorter length of one story. I like Marlin, Supernatural and White Collar and so on.

I'm looking forward to listening to the videos more and also having an amusing and inspiring time with you again!

  3. Hi Vicki, I am one of writers on this blog and a friend of mrsmalone :-) I also teach English for kids aged 3 to 20 something in Tokyo. lol

I've watched your wonderful website. It is a great opportunity for us to watch dramas because we don't get to watch so many of them. And I am sure there are many of exciting ones out there!

I have a daughter who hates English at the moment because of all the school work she had to do. Perhaps you know about how grammar-translation is respected in Japanese schools...
Anyway, I will introduce your site to her and my students and see what they say :-)

    Thanks for the fantastic site!

    Cheers
    Chico

PS. about the background color of your site, I agree with mrsmalone. The Color matters :-) Most of dodgy sites got black background. We live in such a tech-tick world and we tend to judge things instantly. So, the the first impression you get from the site is quite powerful factor to decide whether we read more or not .

  4. Ah how frustrating - I just typed a long comment and it didn't save. Ha! I MUST remember to save things fist before I press send!

Mrs Malone, I loved connecting too, and Chico, great to meet you as well. So sorry your daughter hates English at the moment. Even with such a proficient mother she's put off. Dear dear/. I'd love to hear what she and her friends think of the site and if they comment on any. of the movies I will respond.

Your feedback on the color has been really useful. I've decided that rather than try to tweak it, I'm going to set up a completely different section of the site. That way it can be very brightly colored and have family movies. Just need to find a couple of spare days to get cracking. :-).

    Very best wishes,
    Vicki
